The history of Żoliborz began in 1791, when the village of Fawory was annexed to Warsaw. After the November Uprising, the Russians occupied part of the village to build the Alexandria Citadel. Over the years, the borders of Żoliborz have changed many times. Until 1994, Bielany and Młociny were part of Żoliborz. Żoliborz is one of the districts that suffered relatively little from war damage.
The name of the district comes from the estate of the Piarist priests "Joli Bord" or "Beautiful Bank".
Żoliborz is located on the left bank of the city and is the smallest district of Warsaw in terms of area. Żoliborz borders Bielany to the north, Bemowo to the west, Wola and Śródmieście to the south, and the Vistula River directly to the east.

Thanks to a loan obtained from Bank Commerciale Italiana in the amount of 0.5 million dollars, it was possible to start building the estate. In 1925, the cornerstone was laid for the first WSM house on Wilson's Square, and the first tenants received their apartments in January 1927.
